964 distributer on 3.0l SC motor
Hi,
I found the following text on a web page regarding this conversion. What is meant by the crank gear from the 3.6.. Is that the vertical drive shaft underneath the distributer, or the gear pressed on the end of the crank?? or do i use both parts to get it working..? the plan was to use Mega Squirt II, with a trigger on the crank, so as i see it, i do not need to modify anything in the 3.6 distributer.. hmm but maybe the advance system should be looked. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Text from rensportsystems web page: 2) 964 Dual-distributor converted for 2.4-2.7-3.0-3.2 litre Engines. This one is done by installing a trigger from a donor SC distributor and using the appropriate crank gear, depending upon the engine being used. This unit will not fit the Turbos' due to interference with the boost plumbing. Again, these can be triggered by OEM Bosch CD boxes, Permatune's, MSD's or a proprietary splitter unit for Motronic-equipped engines. This setup is ideal for any Motronic motor and works very well in carbureted or MFI-equipped engines. The 3.6 crank gear must be used for these conversions.' ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roslin ![]()

You need to match the gear on the crank to the gear on the distributor.
The dist, gear on the 2.6 dual dist is the same a the gear on the 3.2. It can on work with a crank gear designed for these engines. The distributor turns clock wise and although the crank gear from an early engine (2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.7, 3.0 turbo) is designed to turn the dist. clock those gears won't work because they are a different diameter. The 3.0 drive gear won't work because it is designed to turn the dist counter clockwise. I would suggest the this is the best option for twin plugging every engine, even turbos. Supertec GEN II twin plug distributor. We offer custom built distributor for all applications without the need to change the crank gear. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Assuming you want to use the 964 unit...
You'll need to change the drive gear on the crankshaft as the 964 dizzy is designed to turn in the opposite direction from the 3.0/turbo variety. (I beleive 2.0-2.7 and 3.2 turn the same direction as the 964, but you might want to check that out) Both rotors of the 964 unit have a mechanical advance which only serves to keep the rotor aligned to the cap. In that system, timing driven off the flywheel. You would probably want to keep the mechanical advance for the same reason that it was originally there. Of course you might come out ahead to sell what you have and buy something built specifically for your needs. I got the impression that the Megasquirt system could work off a VR input instead of a crank trigger, so you have to consider all the pieces. |

3.0 Turbo turns clockwise like the 2.0-2.7 and use the same gear. 3.2 and 3.6 turn clockwise and use a different gear.
3.0 SC and 3.3 turbos up to 89 are counter clockwise rotating. They use the same drive gear. The advance curve in the 3.6 distributor is not an ignition curve so if 911SC ignition parts are installed the mechanism must be recurved. Why would anyone want to use a dual rotor dist. if far better options exist.
