Burnt 930 engine
My local breakers yard has a burned out 930 engine that im considering making him an offer on for a rebuild project. Most of the ancilaries on the outside look toast, does this normally mean the engines are toast inside or does the block and internals normally survive damge in a fire?

Anyone got an answer to this? anyone ever rebuilt a burnt out engine? is there a risk that the cases could be warped etc?
Steve

you never know until it's all torn down and inspected. the last one i saw melted the cradle for the fan housing. water and powdered fire extinguisher chemical can ruin aluminum in a short time. (heads, pistons, cylinders, case), so it's a pig in a poke. you should make a deal after it's apart and you find out what you can use.

I agree with JW. You should definitely make an offer assuming that the case is ruined. Porsche motors can be delicate things. I've torn down 4 used motors that really ended up having very little salvage value, scored bearing surfaces, damaged cam housings and cams, pitted oil pump gears, damaged chain boxes etc. Obviously from neglect that caused a domino effect of damage throughout. Unless it is a super good deal, I'd look elsewhere for a rebuild candidate.
