Rocker Shaft Seals

So, after looking at my rocker shafts today, reading a bit about the RSR o-rings and this thread, I got to wondering if it is as simple as finding some o-rings to fit the grooves in the seals. Those grooves are pretty deep. But, I have the engine apart, and now would be the time to do it.

Anyone ever simply o-ring the grooves in the shafts? Seems as if it would be good insurance. Or, is this another wet dream from my overactive imagination?

Pat

The seals are not normal O-rings. They are shaped like rubber washers. I have searched but have not been able to find an alternate source for these relatively expensive seals.

Thanks Chris and Chris:
I have been doing some more research on these seals; the camp seems split 50 - 50 on the use. My daughter and I cleaned out all of the shafts and retainer cones and through bolts. checked the OD on them, checked the ID on the rebuilt rockers from Camgrinder, and the ID on the bores in the cam towers. Everything is per spec, and when I torque up a through bolt on the shaft, it does indeed swell the shaft end about 0.0015", which makes a good positive seal. Whether this seal will in fact seal effectively for any period of time is the $64k question. I suppose if I can get these seals in a few days, I'll get them in, as I'm starting to get pressed for time on getting the SC back togther. Else, I'll take a flyer on the no seal installation; worst case, the engine will be back out over the winter for 915 work and intercooler fitment.
BTW, John does a nice job on cams and rockers.
Thanks!
Pat

Pat -

I had John do my cams and rockers - I am pleased as well. The seals were not that much, and they seem readily available from Pelican, EBS, etc. Leaks are a bummer and it seems the 911 will zap you every chance it gets to leak oil - might as well stack the deck in your favor!

I look at it like this..... The seals will not cause a leak, and may very well prevent one, so to me, they make sense. If any one if thinking of getting some made that is a little cheaper I will take 250 of them......

Cheers
