My '86 930 Rebuild

Well I have read many peoples posts on their rebuilds, and now I'm starting my own, so I thought I would post some of the details.

I'm only skilled enough to be dangerous with repairs on motors, so I'm using a local shop that I've been using for several years with different cars to perform the build.

I really envy those of you who have the skill and patience to perform these rebuilds yourselves.

Anyway, here's the plan:

The car is a stock except for a B&B de-catted exhaust.

I'm converting to EFI with an Autronic SM4 setup:

Here are the other engine modifications I'm going with:
-Mahle 3.4 P&C's (long sleeve)
-964 cams
-Twin plug heads
-Stock rods to be balanced along with the uprated clutch and flywheel.
-K27HFS
-B&B I/C
-55# Siemens injectors
-GHL headers and muffler with heat
-ARP studs

I'm trying to get about 520-550 hp to the crank.

Here's my "before" pic :

Great looking car, Jim. With that parts list you should end up with a real screamer! Good luck with the progress.

Nice Jim, keep us posted. I plan on using the sm4 also though my ignition system is going to have to look a bit more stock to sneak past smog

Motor is completely apart now. Went to look at the different parts today, and I was amazed at the condition of the crank and the crankcase. The motor has 65K miles on it, but the bearings had hardly any wear at all.

It's interesting to see the cutouts that the factory made on the crank to balance it- now we're sending the crank and rods out for a re-balance.

The supplier of my Autronic setup has recommended I outsource my bulkhead connector and wiring harness, so I'm shopping that now. I'm trying to go with a Mil spec connector and I'm trying to order the wiring in the same color as the Autronic harness to keep confusion to a minimum.

Welcome to the dark side.

Are you going to keep the stock intake manifold?

Why did you pick Siemens injectors?

I think your HP expectations are realistic.

Congrats.

Thanks. I'll be selling the stock intake manifold. I went with the Siemens b/c they were recommended to me by Stephen at IA b/c of their spray pattern. After his recommendation, I did a couple of board searches and they seem to be fairly popular. Do you know something about them that I don't?

Not really. I have Siemens 72lb injectors but would have gone with Bosch if they made them that big because of their low speed (drivability) control and spray pattern. Bosch 52lb inj have a great reputation in these motors at your HP level.

Who is tuning your motor?

It's a local shop called Eurospec- the owner has a great deal of experience rebuilding 911 motors and specifically many 930 motors, but this is a trial run with EFI for both of us.

Let us know how your wiring harness turns out. I need to send my EFI harness out due to poor job.

Finally some (albeit minor) progress. I got the powdercoated pieces back today. The turbo housings, intake manifold and heads are back from Extrude Hone. We are doing a five way grind on Monday/Tuesday and everything should be ready for re-assembly.

The heads are back and ready for assembly. They had the Extrude Hone process done, a five angle grind, new valves/springs/retainers.

Assembly to start next week.
