Cam Options for 3.2 w/Stock P's & C's
What are my options?
P's & C's will remain stock. Currently running with stock EFI, headers and chip. Looking at moving to Carbs along with the cam, but I know I'm limited due to piston clearances. TIA, John

Personally, I'd stick with 964 cams. ![]() Those work very well in your application.

I have built a couple of similar 3.2 engines with the 964 cams and they are great. One was in my own car for a while. Nice addition to what you have right now. Some have used slightly larger WEB 20/21 and I am sure John (camgrinder) has a cam similar to that as well.

SO what would be the advantages of either the 964 or 993 cam? Assuming addition of 46mm carbs, stock redline.

I'm also told GT2-EVO cams works well even with naturally aspirated engines, but your idle may be a bit lumpy, which is annoying for some. I don't mind them. Sounds cool

The individual throttles that carbs offer allow you to run a cam with more overlap than a common plenum set up does. Your limiting factor will be valve clearance since you are using the stock pistons. Give camgrinder a call and see what he recommends. He has done a few sets for me and knows what he is talking about. He can fit you out with a cam that will fit your needs.

I am running a 3.2L with Webcam's 20/21 grind and have absolutely no complaints. zero... great cam, nice flat powerband.
The 20/21 grind is about the max you can run with the DME and still have a turn-key, no issues motor IMHO..... The 964 grind is a great cam choice as well...a bit milder than the 20/21 and probably a tad less power as well. When it was time for me to make the decision, I was looking at either the 964 or the 20/21 and finally decided that if I was going to do it why take a half step? Both cams have a solid reputation for being totally streetable and smogable. With all the work and expense involved I did not want to see myself wishing I had gone with the more aggresive 20/21 grind In all fairness I was also playing with the idea of using one of John(camgrinder) "3.8 supercup" grinds which would also work with the stock DME, But as it has even slightly more lift than the 20/21 and I just plain chickened out...he also recommends at least 10.0:1 c/r to keep the power band starting reasonanbly mid-range and a somewhat smooth idle. Anyway....just my .02.... and I'm always open to correction ![]()

Why do you want to go with carbs?
If you change pistons, put in a typical carb camshaft like the DC40. The 964 is a simple regrind on your 3.2 cams. They should work with your current chip. The DC20 profile is the next step up from the 964. Either one will work with a set of 46 pmo carbs. The 3.8 Super-cup cams do work well with 10-1 cr. They do work with 9.5-1 cr, but give up some mid range power to the 964 style camshafts. ![]()

Motronic rocks. You have to have a chip. The 964 cam will do ya. You want more power, what is it that WydRyd is selling?
Alternatively have you thought about pmo's when choosing your carbs? They are like carbs with todays technology. I too am doing a carbed motor. I want to hear that carb sound. Regards,

And that was with the DME flapper box and a K&N cone airfilter. Like I said...just food for thought.... ![]()

If you are going to carbs, consider an ITB set up. If you shop well it is only a few more dollars..... I did not shop well

Thanks for all the great info.
I have a stock 3.2 w/headers, race muffler and chip, but am looking at a rebuild down the road. I'd prefer to keep the stock P's & C's and a single plug in order to keep the cost down. The two classes in Nasa GTS where it would run would allow me about 210RWHP or 275 RWHP based on the current weight of the car. I'm close to the 210 now, so when I rebuild it I'd like to be closer to the 275. I may be dreaming, but looking at options. I'd like to settle on a plan so I can start to accumulate the needed componets and lessen the financial blow. John
