Turbo scavange pump and front oil tank..

For you turbo guys who are running 930's with turbo scavange pump, where to you plumb the outlet of the scavange pump if you're running front oil tank? ...all the way up front to oil tank? seen folks remove pump and just run it into valve cover, but heard that was bad. thoughts?

HI Joe how old are your crankcases, or have you a oil sump plate or just a sump plug??. we use to extend the sump plate down and run the oil return from the turbo in there and let the oil pump in the engine return the oil, if you have a late case then i would take the sump plug out and return in to there, then take the pump off the back of the cam box.

regards mike

Nothing wrong with draining it into the lower valve cover. That's what my setup does and has been for many years without any issues.

People have also gravity drained the oil into the lowest point on the chain housing/cover without any issues. It *may* require a 0.5-1.0" flange/spacer between the turbo and header flange to lift the turbo up slightly, but it's worked fine for the aftermarket turbo crowd, so a *normal* 930 will work too

The engine oil pump has a lot of scavenge capacity, so it will be fine.

car is 82 930. Interesting point on connecting it directly to the sump plate drain hole, but i'd be scared it would get knocked off in any off track excursions. ...can is dedicated race car.

Anyone have any idea what the 935's did?

Joe:

Mine did drain into the lower left valve cover (1,2,3 side) but I now have a hose that goes the length of the car back to the front oil tank.

WOW, that's a looong length! Are you using one of those electric pumps to pump it that far?

Curious, why didn't you stick to the valve cover gravity drain solution?

We drained it into upper valve cover on TT:ed 3.6. Yeah, it's bad in theory but oil volume actually pulled trough BB Garrett's is negliable. Lower chain cover should be fine.

Although I believe running a dedicated oil line from pump to tank, the Supertec sump cover may offer some interesting options.
