Which Head Studs for Mag Case with Case Savers?

There seems to be general agreement that a rebuild involving a 7R magnesium case should include upgrading with Case Savers, or a similar insert, to avoid "pulled" studs. I have not seem a discussion of which head studs to use with such an upgrade. Stay with the Dilavar studs to further reduce the chances of a pulled stud? Or go with standard steel head studs to minimize the chances of a broken stud?

Thanks in advance,
Tom Harris

Used 24 full thread, coated Divilar studs for my 2.7L 5-6 years ago and have never regreted it. Keeping the engine cool is, IMO, more important than stud material type. I never see over 100C on my oil temp gauge.

i would go for dilivars in any 2.4 or 2.7 engine. they are better now than the naked, corrosion prone early ones.

I'd agree with John except if you had a biral 2.4 then you don't want to use dilivar. The steel sleeves on the biral are what the headstuds clamp against so you want steel studs to match the expansion rate. I've heard now that aluminum cylinders are available for the 2.4 and so in that situation I'd use dilivar.

There is a picture of a mag case with a pulled stud even after a timecert was installed. The engine had steel studs I believe. It's a matter probabilities. I think the odds of pulling a stud with steel are greater than breaking a stud with dilivar.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies. The engine currently has the type 993 Dilavar studs. I will be staying with those, but will definitely install Case Savers, which were not istalled by the PO when the engine was rebuilt the first time.

Cheers,
Tom Harris
