Anybody seen this before...?
I was planning on building up a 2.2S spec motor using this 2.4 E MFI case that was a 3R-4R case...two different halves. I was going to use it vs my 2.2 case , cause my 3R 2.2 case doesn't have piston squirters. It appears that the gear on the crank that drives the intermediate shaft has chewed into the housing that the distributor sits in...not good. I would expect that this might have resulted in some metal flakes being noticed by the PO. I am not going to use the 2.4 crank obviously for my 2.2, but anybody seen this before and have a quick and dirty as to why this happened? Any reason why I should not use the case...as it did not interfere with the distributor, and appears to be cosmetic on the inside of the case?
Thanks, Speedo ![]() ![]() |

I suspect as long as your distributor o-ring sits beneath the cut you'll be fine, this isn't a highly stressed area. As Aaron sez, make sure there are no sharp edges to tear your o-ring.

sharp edges..
I would have thought that when previously rebuilt...or originally built, that the interference between the case and the gear might have prohibited the engine from turning over once everything was bolted up. The o-ring on the distributor is far enough out of the way to not be a problem. My initial thought was that at some point in the life of the motor...either the bearing failed and allowed slop...or maybe a wrong gear was used on that end of the crank.
Has anybody seen this before?? |
