Wayne, my 79 911SC has just 69,000 miles and good oil pressure. Next spring I plan to do a top end rebuild and bump the compression up to 9.5:1. Should I inspect/replace the rod bearings? What Octane fuel will I need to use to avoid detonation with the CR bump? Should I consider switching to PMO carbs for better power and throttle response? The car is only driven weekends and auto-crossed. Track events are possible in the future. Thank you.

I'm not an expert, but from everything I've seen here and inside of 3.0's with that few miles, everything is probably still perfect in there. Plus, a tight top end and a loose bottom end = free HP.
