Photo of 84mm Mahle NIKASIL wanted
Here's a long shot question but worth a try. . . would anyone be kind enough to post a photo of an 84mm Mahle NIKASIL cylinder?
The Biral 84's have a groove in the cylinder to facilitate expansion. I'm curious whether Mahle, when they made all-aluminum 84mm cylinders, such as those sold by Pelican, included this groove, or whether the fins were continuous like the Nikasil cylinders on the 2,7 and later engines. My guess is that they made the fins continuous but would be very interested to see an actual photo. Wayne, any chance you have a set in stock and could snap a photo of one of the cylinders? Thanks in advance.

All right, I realize these are rare. Here are some photos from the Pelican Catalog- - - the pistons certainly resemble the stock pistons, so I assume that there is no break in the fins.
130 HP 80mm 2,0 Normal ![]() 160 HP 80mm 2,0 S-- note "S" piston in the bore ![]() 180 HP 84mm 2,2 S - note "S" piston in the bore ![]() 190 HP 84mm 2,4 S - note "S" piston which isn't as tall, this would reflect the lower compression of the 2,4 piston ![]() These are definitely aluminum cylinders and are fully finned like a 906 cylinder. I think this answers the question.

Compare this to Birol cylinders.

Tom, thanks for the detailed photos. There is definitely a clear difference between a Mahle Nikasil cylinder and a Birol-- perhaps Mahle put the break in the fins to account for the differential expansion rates of the aluminum and cast iron. Birols are known for significant ovality under stress, perhaps this is the reason why.
Thanks again for taking the time to post.
