Altenator/Belt Tension
72 style Altenator and Belt tension:
This set up seems difficult to get the right tension out of the belt. It seems hard to tighten up the pulley snug to the shims. I am having an issue w/ the belt not wanting to "slide" upwards as the pulley presses toward the shims. Is there a Trick to tightening the belt?

Rotate the engine/alternator as you tighten. Usually this happens anyway if you don't hold them still. If it's still not "climbing" then maybe you have the wrong belt. Tension is adjusted to give 1/2 inch of movement at mid belt with finger pressure. Make sure you have all the shims and store the extras on the outside of the pully under the nut and washer. I don't recall how many shims total but if you didn't lose any then you have enough.

I am running w/ 3 shims to give proper tension... I may look into a new belt to verify the length to the one I've got. Do the 2.2 and 2.4 use the same belt?
