for the engine expert what's what
ok here is a fun question, as per the picture you can see 2 pistons, they are both 80mm ( yes for a 2.0) one is brand new and the other had to had the cylinder cut to remove, as you can see they have a different shape ( the dome), the valve pocket is different, they seem to have the same height , I know they will fit but why are they different

With the long skirt like that, and yet with the oil ring at the top, they are definitely T or E pistons. The different valve reliefs mean you probably have one of each.
My other guess is that you have one Mahle, one Kolbenschmidt. Weigh them, I bet they are different. What marks are on them, exactly?

I've got 69E, 68S and 906 single pistons on the shelf and the valve relief on yours are too small to be either a 911L or 911E.
It looks like you have 2 different T pistons - The one you removed from your engine look like a 69T piston (same as 914/6) The other? maybe a 68T? If you are doing a rebuild, any interest in some 68S Pistons w/ or w/o cylinders? Regards, Andrew M

Agree with Andrew. The new piston looks like a '69T/914-6 piston. The other, I'm not sure, don't think I've seen it before. Not large enough valve reliefs (and no oil scraping ring at the bottom of the skirt) so it's not a '65-68 "normal"/911L piston. Definitely not 911E ('69), either.
