Well, It has been 5 LONG years...and I thought I was ready to put this beast together..... I thought wrong!! I had forgotten to order the #8 nose bearing... and I misplaced my old one...but why would I use the old one??? So, it will have to be later this week before the motor is together. Would you like to see some BLING????? Is the case clean enough for ya?????? By the way...the car is DonE's...not mine...

Brad, that stuff sure looks nice. Must be nice to have a fellow, and willing, enthusiast (DonE) around to keep you motivated. You'd think I could find someone to commisserate with in all of Dallas...
By the way, I think I'm on the same rebuild schedule, but will likely skip the polishing as I don't have the patience for it. Please share some specs and history. It will be great to see it together and hear from you again once it's running.

Classic Art Shot!
p.s.: Cant say I'd seen a 911, during several visits to Dallas or Ft Worth last year. Employees at very nice "Domestic" Speed Shop couldn't name one Porsche shop.

hmm, specs and history.... engine specs: 1987 3.3L, which was bought out of a racecar...supposeidly that was in a 962 car that someone had put it in. I spun 2 rod bearings ( can you guess which ones?? 2 & 5) I took the motor apart that was 5 plus years ago!!! Present day.... same 3.3L case, but has had the following mods... - hand polished (what else am I going to do with my time if I don't have the bucks to rebuild it??) - Oil passages cleaned - #4 main bearing oil mod completed - case boattailed - case spiggots honed out to accept larger cyl's - JB Racing custom 98mm cylinders - custom JE pistons (98mm and 8.0 to 1 CR) - stroked crankshaft (CCR stroked the crank to 78.6mm? something close to that, I dont have the spec sheet in front of me) - custom length Pauter rods - port and polished heads with intakes and exhaust opened up (41 and 42mm, respectively) - twin plugged - GT-2 EVO cams - Marco Manzie custom headers (1 and 5/8" primaries, equal length. Burns collectors, V-band clamps, etc) - gt-35r turbo (possibly hybrid) - HUGE full width Bell I/C - 3.2 carerra intake (extrudehoned) - Link EFI engine management - engine oil cooler delete, going with extra oil filter The motor with the 98mm p&c's and the stroked crank is just a hair under 3.6L...so effectivly I now have a 3.6L single turbo, but will have more torque that a factory 3.6 because of the added stroke. yadda, yadda, yadda..... lots more goodies... I will be running a maximun of 1.0 bar of boost, with a max redline of 7,000 RPM's the car has full JRZ coilover suspension, full rollcage, almost everything is carbon fiber, huge racing brake setup from TRG.. etc... Very stiff and very light G50/50 conversion, transaxle cooler and pump, camber boxes for the rear susp. here is a pic of the car...

UPDATE!!!!!
Ok, UPDATES!!!!!
Well, We thought it would be a productive day....we were wrong. We checked clearances, rechecked them several times...everything looked fine, so we put the crankcase together. Still everything is fine. The sealant that goes between the case halves was put on as required...very sparingly!!! Torqued all of the nuts and thru-bolts. We then turned the crank over..perfect..not a sound, nice smooth turning. Because of the design of the JE pistons, we had to put the pistons on the rods, Before putting the rings on, so we completed that. We then put the cylinders on, no broken rings..like I said PERFECT!!! Then we turned the crank over... A very slight knocking sound. You could barely hear it over the noise of the parts rotating, but you could feel it in the wrench we used to turn the motor over. The number 2 rod was hitting the oil pump ever so slightly...... We would not have, and could not have found this before we put the case halves together, as the rod needed to be hooked to the piston, and the piston in it's bore before the rod had its correct orientation. SO...... I guess we will have to split the case apart again, clearance the oild pump, reclean all parts, and then reassemble... Atleast we found it before the motor was completely put together, as it might have never been noticed. Next weekend we plan to pull it apart and have the motor completed. Ok, here are a few pics.... I will update this again after next weekend when the motor finally is together.... Brad

Your lower valve covers don't have the holes in them for the twin plug???? Have you just not drilled them yet?

Are you going to start offering that as an option Chris on your engines?

I have polished cases using a fine wire wheel and a die grinder, to get all the crap off, and then using a buffing wheel and mother's to make it like yours. It's a lot of work but the result is
![]() Is that the method you used to polish the case?

Cstreit, It has been apart for more than 5 years.... Took me allot of spare time dreaming about fixing it to polish the case.
Brian, It is twin plugged, but just have not drilled the lower covers yet....Good eye!!! Ytnuklr, I used nothing more than Mothers Al polish...in the red and white can.... 4 to 5 of The big cans, and about 250 red shop towels. (the kind you can buy at any local auto parts store).. WOW my fingers Hurt!!!!! I wish i could have gotten it more shiney, but i did not want to use a machine or send it away to a polishing shop. I just did it in my spare time while saving money for the rebuild....

How are you going to keep the polished case from corroding quickly?

Scott- Can you post a picture of the wheels and what speed did you run the die grinder at? 20k rpm's?
Any other tips on how to achieve this? Thanks! Bob

Sorry I don't have any pics of the wheels. They are the 3" wheels, slightly flared out (cone shaped -ish). For the wire wheel, they are the "fine" version ie., they won't leave an imprint of wire scratches on the case, just takes the barnacles and stuff off. The other wheels are just buffing heads, different shapes for doing the flat/large areas of the case and then small ball shaped ones for doing nooks and crannies. The die grinder is a cheap ($9.99) one from Harbor Freight and I just run it at 70-80psi. I think it's rated for 23k rpm, somewhere in there. I'll have to check.
Not quite as finished as Brad's work, but a nice result (IMO) ![]() Unless you stay on top of it, it won't stay looking perfect/polished. The aluminum does oxidize--it will form a layer of Al2O3 (Aluminum Oxide) on the surface. This is actually good because the oxide layer prevents further corrosion. The 930 case I had in this particular instance was just so covered in crust that I felt it warranted more aggressive cleaning measures. My goal was not to blingify the whole engine. Brad, your arms must have been *tired*! ![]()

Man that is very impressive. It looks like a piece of art. I want to hang it from my wall. 5 years, WOW! For a guy with your kind of determination (the knid needed to polish all that) I can't believe you never then also took it upon yourself to do the rebuild?
