Another cam timing ?

Pelican's i need your help;
first i want to check cam timing and if incorrect, adjust.
'85 carrera, engine in the car, cam chain covers off, engine @ TDC compression #1, digital metric dial indicator pre-loaded & zero'd, turn engine 360* indicator reads 2.25mm which from my understanding is 1mm out of spec. no additional pressure on cam chains just the pressure fed tens. i also have a tool that butts against the case and telescopes against the idler arm but no instructions on how to use; ie. hand tight etc. i don't recall Wayne's book showing this tool however Bentley shows it but no description on its use.

tonight i plan to check the right bank. Am i doing this correctly? tia.

It sounds like you are doing it correctly. You should make sure you are looking at the correct mark on the pully and that the valve clearance is .004 inches.

Andy,

thanks for the reply...on a carrera i've always used the 2nd of the two closely spaced marks as the distributor rotor appears to be in the correct position, with valve clearance @.004 in.

I cannot confirm which mark is correct. On all they pullys I've seen there are other marks which are 120 degrees away from Z1 (TDC). These marks are TDC for the other cylinders. You can use one of them to check the timing on the appropriate cylinder.

I recently went through this myself and everyone here was helpful in identifying the correct Z1 mark. As Chris said it is the left of the two closest marks on your pulley.

Good luck,

Alex

Yes, the second mark (of the two close together) is the Z1 Mark.
