dwell meter hook up?

1974 911, 2.7, all stock with cap discharge system and points.
.
Waynes book 101 projects, pg 73 says do NOT connect the dwell meter across the coil as damage may occur to the CD system and the meter, instead hook the "signal lead" (- lead I guess?), to the point wire on the dist. I thought the neg wire on the coil went to
the dist?............I'm confused??
,
please describe the best way to hook up my dwell meter, and help me understand why?
thanks ,
marion

clip the meter lead to a long skinny screwdriver and touch the terminal on the side of the distributor. there's a metal tab there where a wire plugs on.
