How much $ do you have in your rebuild?
I am adding up all of my engine rebuild receipts and cannot believe how much money I have thrown on this rebuild. I have tried to save wherever I could and I do the work myself. My total is north of $8K to rebuild a 78 SC engine into 3.2. This amount includes M&K muffler and SSIs and staying with the CIS system. Anyone else want to share their secret?

Do not feel bad, way too much here. I am even selling stuff that I love to pay for future improvements. Custom mountain bikes and road bikes, my 72 911t roller, other odd and ends. All in the endeavor to make an out of date air cooled motor more powerful. At the end of the day I probably could have purchased a gt3 motor and put it in the car and called it a day. Wish I had thought of that before.

That will teach you not to add up your receipts.

All my receipts are kept in a secret tin in the garage marked 'Broken Parts Bin'... *laugh* I don't dare add those up... If she who holds the purse strings found out I'd be installing hard wood floors and other honey-dos instead of working on my car
![]() I think i might have about 3-4k into it as an stock rebuild... but, I've been part collecting for a year. best regards, michael

7k in the engine...so far now add an extra $2300 for the transmission that was diagnosed last week. Whenever my wife needs anything done around the house, or the dishes done, she just brings up the rebuild.

3.2 L top-end including new exhaust valves, valve guids/seals/keepers, 964 cam regrind, new rocker shafts, re-bushing rocker arms, and complete engine re-seal: $2200 in parts/labor. That includes a few while you're in theres like ref/speed/cyl head temp sensors. Plus $850 for a trans rebuild. So, just a hair over $3K for everything.
I did everything but the machining. This is my 2nd 911 rebuild, so I learned how to save this time. ![]()

Jay can you offer some tips on what you did differently vs. your first rebuild to save money?

My totals are similar to Jay's. I have my '82SC engine apart and waiting for my heads and cams to come back. I have done everything myself except the machining. Reconditioning the heads, regrinding the cams (964) and reconditioning the rockers will come in at ~$1000. Consumables for the rebuild (i.e. bearings, gaskets, head studs...) will be ~$1000. I picked up a set of engine tin (mine was pretty rusted) for $100, a muffler for $50, crossover pipe $30. About $125 in parts to rebuild the CIS.
All in all, I imagine I will be somewhere around $3K. I don't think I cut any corners, but I kept things pretty much stock. Geoff

I guess my shopping list is the biggest so far then:
Motor: New P&C's from EBS JE 10:5:1 New bearings New CAM tower on the passenger side New spray bars Complete powder coat of all tin, fan, anything else attached to the engine for that matter Crank work Rod work New to me SSI's new stainless muffler Oil lines Timing chains reconditioned rockers 964 cam regrind (thanks Camgrinder!) Final assembly labor (I travel just about every week, so I can't get it done) Transaxel: New sliders dogs and syncros on 1 and 3 and 4 New shift forks New shift guides New bearings in case Professional labor I'll do the final assembley including installing the covers, shroud and injection. I'll also mate the transmission and install the motor.

I have three rebuilds going on at the moment: 3.0 turbo project, 2.7 race engine, and 2.2. If I start adding, I will have to slit my wrists.

Since I did stop counting, I may need the Zenith kits after tax day. PM me if they don't sell on Ebay! Pat

Interesting thread,
I don't add up my receipts but I do hide them from the wife...just kidding. You really got to love these cars because it's difficult getting your money back if you sell. For me, selling is not the objective...I love these cars! If your curious, I have a 3.2L Euro in a 76 Targa. I'm almost finished with this 2.5 year long project. I rebuilt and replaced just about everything, most of the work is done by me to save money. I even learned how to powder coat. At this point I'm about $5000.00 invested. Regards, Alex ![]() ![]()

Mine has a more traditional look. I would like to try doing a little extra powder coating with the next one.

Once I broke $10k I stopped counting. I suspect it will end up somewhere around $13-15k.

Reading this thread it looks like those that go with different P/Cs than they had spent much much more. To be expected, but the amounts are beyond just the parts...
if you are going to go... go big ![]() -m
