Oil strainer screen inside case under bearings
On the early 2,0 liter engine there are a pair of oil strainer screens attached below the main bearing webs using clips.
Are these necessary? Are they used in the later engines?

I believe they were to prevent "foaming" of the oil. They may help with preventing the oil mist that floats around the cranckcase and slows down the crancksaft as well as frothing up the oil. Since they weren't on the later engines I think you can safely do away with yours.
