rebuild a 3.0 sc motor
Hi there guys,
I need some advice, my mechanic has convinced me to go for a 3.0 sc motor over my mag case 2.7, it is for the street but a bit of a hot rod as well. Now I have all the parts from my local dismantler to choose from, for my rebuild. I have the following items already... DC60 Cams Carrera 3.2 oil pump 3.2 oil fed tensioners SSI's M&K 2in 2out exhaust (by the way is awsome) Need to Purchase... 46mm PMO carbies JE pistons 9.5:1 Having the heads rebuilt with Camgriders dual springs and titianium retainers. Now I beleive... 1. that heads from a 78 sc motor have bigger valves than an 80 model. 2. The crank and case from an 81 model is stronger than a 78 I doing this from scratch so what advice could you give me on part selection. I in two minds, using stock rods and Barrels to save on $$ or buy new barrels and pistons and do a 3.2, is there much benefit. Matt

78-79 heads have bigger ports. They will give you more top end with maybe a little less torque below 5000 RPM. The crankshaft and case are identical all years as far as I know. Even if they aren't they are all plenty strong. Stock barrels are fine if they aren't worn out. There are measurements to check. 98mm barrels will yeild about 7.5 percent more HP and torque. They will also of course be new so they will last longer.
