Graduation Pics

Not my first rebuild, and probably not my last, but my first using Wayne's book. Good info makes all the difference.

OK, I have my first two break-in drives behind me now, and the verdict is...

Wow, this is a hot engine. It's actually better than I hoped. It squats the rear-end like a hopped-up 930 I once drove. I can't wait until I can fully open it up. Oh, I had my right side spark plug wires wrong in the pictures above. It gave me a good scare.

I'm breaking it in on 100 octane race gas. Let me know if this is a bad idea. When is it safe to do the timing at 6000 RPM? When is it safe to do a dyno run?

Here are the specs I ended up with: 2.8, J&E 92mm pistons 9.5:1, early S-cams, Webers 40 IDAs w/ 36mm venturis, Factory sports muffler, SSI. This has been a great fun project. Thanks for all the great info Wayne. And thanks everyone else for all the advice along the way.

John,

I started with a stock 1976 2.7 911S core. Unfortunately my '76 was from before the change to the larger oil pump, and the oil bypass mod, so I had the mod done with the rest of the case machining. I did keep the old oil pump though. Hopefully your '76 is from after this change. I was able to use just about everything else in the long block, including the Alusil cylinder, which were bored to 92mm and Nikosil processed. I'd be glad to share more details, but I don't want to bore everyone.

John,

Hard to guess what the horsepower is, since it's a unique combination. My baseline is the carrera RS, which has 210hp. Now, I have Webers not MFI, so I may have a slight HP loss for this, but not much, since I have big venturies. My displacement is larger at 2808 vs 2687 for the RS which should be good for +5%. I also have higher compression than the RS at 9.5:1, but this might not translate into more measurable HP. The sports muffler probably helps some, it's loud enough anyway. Keep in mind that the factory numbers are minimum, not typical. I'm hoping it might be over 240, but I'll admit this might be optimistic. My car weights 2045 lbs, so it has great HP to weight ratio regardless, and it's great fun to drive so far. I can't wait to get it on the track. The Dyno will tell all, I'll let you know.

Thanks,

Here are the parts I did not reuse:

Would you believe I was still getting good leakdown and compression measurements:

EBS bored and reprocessed my Alusil cylinders to Nikasil. They did a great job too. I think it's $150 per jug. I can now say I've seen Mahle cylinders that are Alusil , and KS cylinders that are Nikasil.

Ditto Terry's question... What is the process for reusing those Alusils?

Nice motor. My 2.7 MFI with JE 9.8:1 is on its way!

What I want to know is: How the heck did you get to 2045lbs????

Damn, I hope those Wallabies don't win the World Cup (ditto on the Poms!)

Ciao,

My trick to the low weight? I started with an early car, strip-out everything from the interior, removed the under coating... and I havn't installed a roll-cage yet. The weight won't be so impressive after I install the safety equipment. I just have to share one more picture. I just love this shot:

They've had a turn

You guys got a BIG fright on Saturday! Scotland should be much easier.

I just hope we keep those English grubby paws off of Webb Ellis!
