'80 3.0 cam timing

I had a blown head gasket so I had to tear apart one side of the engine. Now I am at the cam timing portion of the festivities. Waynes book has two different ranges for the same SC cams and I am not sure which to use. My engine type is 930/07 so it looks like I use the 1.4 - 1.7 range, but I measured the one bank and got 0.9, which is the low end of the other range. A search revealed Porsche changed the timing but I couldn't find which I should use.

The car is mostly a DE car. Can I set the cam at 0.9 and call it a day? Or should I reset them both to something else?

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks,
BK

Hi BK,
The spec for your motor is 1.4 to 1.7mm. True the earlier motors were set at 0.9 to 1.1mm.
In fact over a 5 year period Porsche spec'd the same cams at 1 degree BTDC, 7 degrees BTDC and finally with Carreras at 4 degrees BTDC.
Likely chain stretch is responsible for the 0.9mm reading. If you were happy with your motor prior to taking it apart, then yes set the one side to match the other.
Likely with this much chain stretch it's time for new chains. Then I would retime both sides to original specs.
Are the chain tensioners extended close to max?
There's lots of pictues of old stretched chains and new chains to compare to.
Of course a close inspection of the drive and driven sprockets is part of any chan replacement. Lots of info on this as well.
Really depends upon how much time you want or can spend playing with your motor.
Have fun,
