Sweet. What about the gearbox. Did the 72 have the 915 gearbox or the 901 gearbox. Is the 901 gearbox good for 200+ HP?

915. Henry went thru it and replaced the synchros etc. However, since the car sat for many years with a hole in the #4 cylinder, the mileage on the trans was only 54K. Seems to handle the power no problem.

I wonder if the 901 gearbox could handle 200 HP?

Having driven a 912 with the 901, I would preserve it if at all possible.

In the 914 community there are quite a few folks running 200-240hp competitively with stock 901 box's.
Now we've a slight advantage over the 911 configuration as the output drive turns towards the solid side of the 901 case. Its not unheard of for the v8 & Subaru conversion crowd to run stock 901 at above 300hp but most those guys forgo 1st gear. In the long run if your considerate on your equipment there's no reason why a 901 shouldn't withstand 200 ponies. I.e limit your burnouts :-) |

Use a billet intermediate plate, don't "Dairy Queen" the clutch, and that 901 will handle 300HP. The 901 is a good shifting, lightweight tranny for a small bore motor. I see them hooked to 3.2 engines all the time and they last a long time. Lock out 1st, use second through 5th, and it will live behind a Small block Chevy motor.
Definition: "Dairy Queen the clutch" - A high RPM drop of the clutch so that the wheels break traction causing lots of smoke to impress the girls sitting at the Dairy Queen.

Wow - I had completely forgotten about this thread. I don't think I upgraded the oil pump but I will check my paperwork and update.
