2.2 upgrades???
My buddie wants to squeeze a little more power out of his 71t. He is running ssi's, stock zentih carbs. , and a sport muffler. The car runs perfect, and has normal oil consumption and good leakdown #'s, ( we did the top end a couple of years ago), so I am having a hard time selling him on the 2.4 upgrade. We are thinking of going to an e cam or solex cams . any other good ideas??? This is an autocross car, so we dont want to loose much of the bottom end power. I think that his biggest competitor locally runs an e car, so we are trying to make him a little more closely matched to him. Any ideas much appreciated
Thanks Fred

There isn't much you can (economically) do to a 2.2. You can put in S Pistons and E Cams for a decent bump while maintaining your lower end grunt. After that you have to replace crank and rods to go 2.4 which involves a case split. At that point you start looking at machine work on the case and all that entails.

Hi Fred:
I truly do not recommend to keep thinking of "too much" improvement of your 2.2 you can do several changes, but you should spect the $10 k numbers for a hot S... I don't like the idea of the E cams and Higher CR pistons because the lack integrity you get doing that, as you know the Crank is not counterweighted so thats the first problem and with that you must change the rods and then and then and then! ... you changed EVERYTHING... So here's my share and expirience, I did change the flywheel, and it is amazing the feeling of the al flywheel, the carrera chain tensioners should be done as well and the oil bypass mod if you think you will go to a hotter engine. I restored the engine completely and the power is amazing, I don't need anything more, but I did some changes to the Zeniths and the heads (polishing, not a big deal) and my cars are amazing, both have the same now, I'm leaving both as twins in different colour. I think you should go to the tranny, suspension and brakes, the 125 bhp is a dream to me, considering the year and use... but still there are other opinions of ppl saying the E cams and S pistons (10.3:1 CR aprox.) with the carbs tuned up to reach the E specs are a great upgrade!
