What grade HW on Case lock nuts?

What grade nut are the nylocks on the case? Grade 6 or 8 or 10? Is it different for the M8's, M6's, and M10's?

Thanks!

-Michael

I use the nuts that come in a nice valve cover gasket set. Then I use the old nuts on the valve covers and replace them the next time I do a valve adjustment. They are nice cad plated looking nuts. I don't know what grade they are but this is a low torque application so I don't think it matters. The aluminum crush washers are more critical and some of the gasket sets I've bought didn't have new ones, they had steel instead. I re-use the old aluminum washers when that happens, or use the ones from a new valve cover gasket set like the nuts.

Michael,

DIN 985, either Property Class 6.6 or 8.8 for all of them, even the M10. You probably won't be able to find M8s in anything less than 8.8 these days. Also, make sure you get 13mm ATF (across the flats, also known as Sclhlusselweite-- it would just be WRONG to assemble your case with 12mm ATF carb nuts! Mwahahaha!

OLD nuts are grade 6G. . . but that's another thread

Is that a trick for saving weight? Wonder if your H-stock friends have noticed?

Thats a great idea about the valve cover/old nuts. Currently, though, I have a pile of 25 year old case nuts that I'll probably dispose of. Not sure I would trust them to hold the covers on

John, as always, you are nuts I read that thread about the 6g nuts hoping it would tell me the answer so I would not have to post I'll try and check the ATF #, but I may end not being able to get that info... so either I'll be correct, or saving weight

My bulk supplier has everything in Class 6 and not Class 8? Maybe I'll keep looking. I have a few weeks yet

Thanks guys!

-Michael

Michael,

Are your old nuts nylock or all-steel? Don't throw them away until you answer.

LOL, there's no ATF number, just make sure you use a 13mm wrench to tighten them.

I just bought a bag of M8 DIN 934 nuts from McMaster, these are 8.8, made in Taiwan, zinc plated. Headmark can't be found in the known sources. Very inexpensive and these days the quality is good enough for a low-stress situation like case perimeter.
