type 964 3.6 Rebuild Cost?
What are the costs to rebuild a 964 3.6 engine?
Assumptions: 1. Parts cost only, you DIY all labor. 2. Include sublet machining and plating/powder coating. 3. Cost for parts based on Pelican Parts catalog or street price. 4. Tools cost not included, except for 964-only specialty tools. 5. Include cost of assembly liquids, sealants, etc. 6. Stock only, no performance upgrades. 7. Porsche OEM parts only. 8. Assume new P&C set. 9. Assume sealing ring upgrade only. 10. Itemize Appreciate input from those who have "been there". |

Kirk,
Thanks for the reply. Any chance you can itemize? I realize it's a lot of work, so break it down any way you want just to get it going. Maybe others can break it down further and contribute. Thank you! |

Unfortuneatly I am out of town for work right now, so I dont have all the bills at hand. (and I would be scared to even if I did)
I rebuilt my motor last year. 3.6 liter, and I updated the pistons / cylinders. I did all the work myself and sent out the required parts for machining. I purchased a set of used late style Pistons & Cylinders for about 1k USD. However you will spend about 3K for a new set. You will need to send your heads in for machining. (to add the groove for the sealing ring. At that time they might as well change the valve guides, valve job, etc etc) so plan on about 3k for that. $500 for plating & powder coating $500 for replacement used engine tin if required $2000 in various parts, rings, seals, gasket sets, timing chains, rails, nut/bolt kit, oil tubes, etc $1000 to replace all the oil lines that are either shot or you end up breaking trying to get the motor out. $700 to replace your cams which will undoubtably be pitted like every other 964 cam ever removed. $1000 for clutch parts you will probably end up replacing while you are in there. Crank should be magnafluxed. $100 If your car is an 89 or a 90, then it will have the magnesium valve covers, which you should probably switch out to either the factory aluminum or an aftermarket billetr aluminum set. (unless you are lucky and they dont leak) $300 Plug Wires $500 Distributor caps, rotors, plugs $200 Injector flow balancing? $150 And the list continues on from there. Its easy to hit the 10k mark. I spent more like 14k on mine. It depends on how much needs to be fixed / replaced. I went into mine thinking 5k. You can read the thread I wrote during my rebuild here: 964 3.6 rebuild It shows good detail on all the steps. Kirk

You had to ask so I finally added it up.
I just finished my first rebuild since my teens (25+ yrs ago). I have a 1990 C2 track car with a 3.8L. Tools - including metrics, some Porsche specific and general rebuild tools (torque wrench...) = $332 Books and Manuals = $215 Misc supplies (oil, emory cloth) = $125 Seal / Gasket Kits and a few odd replacement parts (such as a new throw out) = $1,231 (but did not replace clutch) Machine shop, heads only but replaced all valves = $2,100. Engine started right away with almost no problems - yet. Just finished it two days ago and still working on the break in. I would characterize it as a highlight of personal achievement and recommend diving in to anyone that has the space and a lot of patience. |

John,
Give me a ring (pm'd my phone number) and I can help you work thru costs. There are a lot of possibilities and I'll see if I can help narrow down what you will and won't do.
