Intake: wha happened
My right side intake runner flanges cracked on the inside for # 4 and 5 on a freshly o/h'd 87 engine. I know I torqued them to spec using new intermediate flanges and gaskets. Is this common? Anyway, I need a replacement.
|
odd.. are you just going to have it welded?
|
Hope to find a replacement part from somebody who moved up to carbs, or maybe a salvage engine, but if I can't find one at a reasonable price, welding is a possibility.
|
curious why they cracked..
could be interesting to lay down some straight edges on the runner faces and along the heads.. just my 2 cents... so we can all be looking out for something you might find.. |
I am gonna pull the engine next week. Will take some pics and post whatever I find.

Found the problem. pic one problem: Pic 2 result and culprit.

edit: me idiot....
so it was not seated well and when tightened down it developed a crack? |
I was going to suggest either an errant washer already on the stud... Obviously you would have seen that.
The shroud is very tight around the flanges there and if the edge got caught under the flange, it could have caused this when you tightened it down. Either way if you have it welded, make sure the sealing surface to the head is machined down flat and square again. |
