Need short course in transmissions
Disaster. Transmission has been warning me trouble was coming. Made noises going into third, sometimes hard to get into fourth and occasionally would resist moving the car after being in reverse. Recently it began to lock up in third, not nice when going down straight and then lugging thu a turn when second was necessary. Then it locked up in fifth at a stop light.
Car has 150K and transmission was gone into once before by PO. Questions: Repair or overhaul? Cost ranges? What do you get from Vertex exchange program? What type of turn-around can I expect.

When you say "locked up" you mean as in "Frozen and won't turn" or "won't come out of gear"?
Rebuilds can run from $1500 for a basic teardown and syncro refresh to much much more depending on what's broken. Op sleeves and gearsets are $300-$800 each so you can imagine they run up prices in a hurry. Since you've been driving it this way for a while, I'd expect to replace your op-sleeves and some dog-rings, possibly even a gear. The "stuck in 3rd" is a classic 915 track trans issue and is often a result of the dog working it's way off the gear.

Thanks, Yes, it stuck in gear while on the track, wouldn't release. Then 3/4 lap later, out it came just like it was designed to do. I don't like unrepeatable events, either mechanical or electrical. You spend a lot of money and are never quite sure you fixed the problem, so you wait for the symptoms to return.
I wish somebody would answer the question about Vertex swaps? Who does their overhauls?

Give Gary Fairbanks a call. He's been doing tranmissions for years. He is located in CT and has an ad every month in Pano.
