Unhappy 2.2 coming apart

This is my first post, although I have been reading through for years.
My 70 2.2 had developed a slightly different noise and when I got home the other night I drained the oil and removed the screen above the pickup. Much to my dismay I found many pieces of metal and one timing chain roller.

It would looks like it is time for a complete rebuild but I am not sure where to go from here. Looking for advice/input as to what my next step should be. Rebuild or replace with newer, and larger.

The car is a 1970 but has been upgraded with 81SC parts before I bought it back in 1987. I brought it over from the Netherlands.

I would sure like to upgrade to more power but I like the Weber carbs and the simplicity of the old 2.2

What to do now??

That's a sad story. I'd suggest using this board to PM folks like Walker, et. al. with as much as you can determine that's wrong with the engine. Maybe it's a modest DIY.

All it takes is money and time. More $$$ = Less time.

Sorry to hear that. Welcome.

Have you set a budget?

Your long block needs refurbishment/replacement.

Now are you ready to have fun? Serious fun but fun. The car is going to be out of commission, and yet you can put it back on the street doing the work yourself if you can devote much of your time to it.

Depending on where you are, choosing a good machine shop/builder is going to take you closest to where you want to be. A swap with a "newer" long block has uncertainties, a new motor -practically none. The costs often end up being the main factor, so long as you stay away from the slippery slope, then not even money can help. But i am biased.

Is it too simplified to say, you can ship your long block to the right person and get it back like new in a month (best case), and put the accessories back on your self and install (most fun), or alternatively you can put in another motor, you know like a 3.6 with PMOs(you fell off the slope)?

Find a 2.7, 3.0 or 3.2 longblock and transplant all your carbs, fan, shroud and exhaust to it. It will really wake up your little T.

I suspect you could do this transplant for less than rebuilding your 2.2. If you want to rebuild you are in the right place. There are a few things you can do, like cams and pistons that will keep the fun simplicity of the 2.2. FYI the 2.2E spec engine is wonderful. I have this in my targa and love it. It has all the early, high-revving feel that makes a longhood so much fun.

If you found bits of timing chain, pull the chain covers and see how things look. I suspect you will find the problem pretty quickly.

Just an update: I took the chain covers off and to my surprise didn't find a broken chain link. What I did find is the right chain has a master link in it and the other side doesn't. I suspect the PO must have had chain trouble and replaced the right one but didn't get all the old pieces. I can shine a light in to see the crank timing gear and can see where the chain roller pieces went around the gear taking pieces out of it too. I would guess that is why the sound/pitch of the engine changed.

I just don't have time to do a rebuild right now so I have purchased a 2.7 complete (supposedly rebuilt...time will tell). Now I have to decide on using the CIS or the carbs. I think I will try the CIS. Now I have to run a new fuel line for the HP pump. I will search the old post for more info.
