Got my parts back from the powder coater today. I went with all black on my sheetmetal, but I went with a ceramic "titanium" color on the fan, the strap and the valve covers. Something a bit different, but not too wild. The ceramic coating is thinner and magnesium friendly, so there should be no issue with lifting or interference with the shroud.

I'm going to try and get the nerve to hand paint the Porsche letting on the upper valve covers red. It looks like a long, tedious job to get it to look right, but may give it a go one night.

Those are great color choices, Ed. I was thinking about using the same combination myself.

Did you use a local vendor for the coatings? If yes, would you recommend them?

Ed, that is very cool, it reminds me of the original parkerizing on the fan strap of the SWB 911! (The one that rusted because water leaked through the engine lid, which is why the factory put a foil timing sticker on in later years!)

re: painting the valve covers, you could try a hard rubber/plastic roller with some red paint, the hardness of the roller will keep it from smooshing paint in between the letters. go really easy on the paint, build it up nicely.

I'd thought about a really short nap roller, but dimissed it as too sloppy, a rubber roller may be the ticket. I'll see what I can find.

I did get it done locally, a guy name Michael Tomlin at Specialty Performance Coatings in Arlington. He's focused on cars, it isn't a "generic" coating company. He actually recommended the ceramic for the magnesium fan, which he already knew it to be made of. This was very encouraging. He also does ceramic headers, etc. Here's his info, I can't recommend him enough, a great guy:

Now, if I wasn't going to MSR Houston next weekend to help Rob Cohen with his 911 at a NASA race, and Rennsport Reunion the following (You're going, aren't you Bob?), I'd be able to make some serious progress in the near future. All of this, as well as a trip to Seattle and Portland next week for biz...(I need to retire again)

I'll get the P's and C's all on this weekend, and maybe the heads and towers too. I've got to do some maintenance on the 928, and catch up on some Honey-dos as well. Too much to do, so little time.

RE: Painting the RED PORSCHE. Ive done mine before and Had GREAT results by using Enamal Paint used for model cars. It only cost about a buck. Get a Good brush and get to work. Its not that hard when you get down to it and you can make it look Perfect. The paint is also very durable. Good luck.. Love the ceramic color!

I heard that Testors has paint pens, this may work if the model enamel paint held up for GotaT. I'm worried about my eyes and jiggly hand with a brush.
