The Engine Rebuilding Forum will observe a moment of silence at 12:00 EDT today in honor of your engine.
The good news, if there is any good news, is that the Dorkiphus crew are more adept at dropping an engine for teardown than the Metro New York region are at mixing a Martini and calling their mechanic. ![]() That's a piece of rod end for sure, I predict carnage. Only the teardown will show for sure, but I would expect that a piston seized and the rod cap broke. I would expect to replace the piston and cylinder, the rod, and the crank may have major damage. The shiny piece looks like a piece of piston skirt which probably cracked off when the broken rod hit it.

Yeah I already posted these on the dorki board. I won't get around to dropping the engine and starting the teardown until Oct 13-14 at the earliest. I knew it was bad when I realized the #5 piston was stuck open. I didn't realize how bad until I took the screen out last night. I should say forced the screen out I pretty much destroyed it trying to get it out because of all the chunks and peices. Feeling around there are mini pieces like the middle pic all around the inside of the case.
No known cause as of yet. It only happened last week. Was driving down the interstate, heard what I now know as the death rattle and it cut off. Did some testing and found the #5 cyl was stuck open. More last night revealed this. I've had a couple days to think about stuff, and I am bummed, but what can you do. Such is life sometimes.

To be more specific, it's part of the big end of a connecting rod. I hope the damage is limited.
