Ring Position on a new 2.7 SET
I just bought a brand new Mahle 2.7 piston set.
The pistons are already inserted in the liners. Do I have to disassemble and check the ring position. What is the OEM ring position for the three rings. Regards Bob |

I personally would, so as to clean them thoroughly and double check the gaps are correct. Ring positions should be 120 degrees off to minimize the chances of gaps lining up in and when there is ring rotation.

I would definitely remove the pistons to clean the cylinders, who knows how much dust has accumulated inside. Wayne's book recommends putting the oil ring gap at the top of the cylinder to prevent oil leaking by, and the two compression rings at 90 degrees to the oil ring gap spaced 180 degrees apart.

I totally forgot Wayne's suggestion for the oil ring, that's a good one John. You also mentioned on another thread not lining up the gaps with the oil return holes, another good suggestion.

Thank for all the help. I like V12 scetch with the 4-10-2 position.
The other point is lining up the gaps with the return holes in the 3rd oil return ring. Have you seen cases when using the 2 o'clock postion that there was an overlap of the pistons return bore and the ring gap? Regards Bob Last edited by HKZ Bob; 09-28-2007 at 01:16 PM.. Reason: Typo |

HKZ Bob - that's not a sketch - thats a piece of the porsche workshop manual.
Hope it helps you though - until I searched for the drawing for you, I thought it was 9, 3, 12 - live and learn I guess - read the manual more often seems like a good idea for me now.
