No spark
I tried to start my freshly rebuilt 3.3 turbo engine (79 930). I followed the procedure which included getting oil pressure (oil came out the turbo drip can, so I know it had it) and even primed the fuel distributor, and was getting fuel at the injectors.
The first time I tried to start, I had spark, but my ignition timing was off, so I re-timed it. when I put it all back together I didn't have any spark. I thought it might be the distributor wire as I had to re-wire it once, so I tried to re-wire again and still did not work. I made sure to keep the ground wire separate from the inner green wire. anyone have any ideas of what could be going on?

Anyone have any ideas on how I can test the distributor wire? does it have a constant or alternating current? anyone know what the other end connects to on the wire harness? I already checked the fuses and made sure the coil was wired up correctly

As I mentioned to you, electricals are not my bag...I'm much more of down and dirty mechanical type; therefore I'm not sure how you test the wire. However, I'm pretty sure it only needs to go from the dizzy to the CDI box. I'm sure this isn't obvious, as the factory probably has it inbedded in the factory harness/loom. But I think if you pull back the boot that's on the CDI wiring plug, you might be able to determine which one is green trigger wire.

As for wiring your coil, I found an old wiring diagram from someone elses 930 engine removal:
![]() Looks like the white wire gets the left side and the brown/white gets the right. Hope this helps.

I have done about 5 hours of research on the "green wire of death" in the past 24 hours. I am 99.9% sure this is my problem as it is no longer green, but black. The thing that sucks is, this wire is going to cost $100 to run a new line from the dizzy, bypass the harness, and run fresh coax cable to the two points on the CDI box. Even worse than that is, my engine start will be delayed another week or so just b/c of a little green wire. Oh well, at least now I will be getting my masters in wiring to add to my cam timing PHD

That diagram definately helps, that one is a lot simpler than the ones in the shop manuals

I'm sure you are concerned about what kind of electrical damage might be occurring within the harness (electrical fires do indeed suck), but is there no way to just wire directly from the dizzy to your CDI plug?
Then maybe carefully cut into the wire harness and verify/inspect that no other wires are exposed and/or shorting due to the trigger wire failing. If all looks good, tape it back up and move forward.

I did some minor surgery on the wiring harness right where the dizzy wire goes in, and I did not see any heat damage at that point. I will just leave the old wire in the harness and run a separate wire directly from the dizzy to the CDI. I bought some heat protecting shrink wrap which I will cover the whole line in, then I was going to use some metal sheathing to wrap around that just to keep it from rubbing off/snagging. I am probably going overboard, but with all the posts out there about the green wire, and all the people that have been left stranded b/c of it, its better to be safe than sorry.

Giving this a BUMP! Come on, John, you know you are stalling!!!! Rig that damn thing and fire it up!!!! I think you're trying to sabotage your own project! The fear of "did I do this right" is holding you back! Come closer to the ledge - it's not too far down...well maybe it is

hahaha, thanks for the kick in the Pants!
I have the "green wire" on its way from Pelican, Via 2-day Fed Ex, that will be here tomorrow I have the rest of the kit for the wire on its way from Eagle day, and not sure when that will be arriving. My buddy has some high grade coax cable, that I will be picking up tomorrow as well. (if the eagle day kit doesnt arrive, I will be ghetto rigging for start up) I also ordered a case of Brad Penn Break-in oil since my original oil is probably full of gas. I am shooting to have all this done by the end of the week, as I need to go to Virginia this weekend so wont have time.
