Introducing......MY new longblock!
Well, after a couple of slow days where I seemed to be fighting little crap, and not making much progress, I got the longblock done today.
When I say little stuff, I mean crap like getting my 5/8" OD Bronze bushing for the tensioner safety collars home to find it was a little flattened. I go back to Lowes thinking I hoped they restocked, as I'd gotten the last one the other day. Well, of course not! So, off to Home Depot-where they asked me what the 1/2" ID X 5/8" OD Bronze bushing was going in. I couldn't find any in the store, so I ended up buying a couple of copper 1/2" street ells, and cut off the legs that were 1/2" ID. They worked perfect inside the tensioners for the fail-safe collars. I was also screwing around yesterday with the timing on my RH cam, shoulda left well enough alone, and screwed up my timing pin (long/stupid story). I tried to get one locally, but no such luck on Friday after T-day. Ended up making one out of a Grade 8 6MM hex head....then, I got the rockers in yesterday and adjusted the valves too. Today, I got the p-tensioners in, modified the RH chain case for the lower #4 plug, and got the chain covers and valve covers on, the oil cooler on, and my distributor timed to #1 (famous last words, I know, but I think I'm good). I hereby retire my tube of Assembly Lube. :D Last, but not least, my finishing touch on the fan housing strap: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195940033.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195940061.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195940082.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195940110.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195940139.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1195940171.jpg |
Looks very good Ed!
Cheers |
love the grey + red.... very tasteful but still give signals that theres something in there!
|
Thanks guys, the big day is getting closer. Jeff, if you PM or e-mail me your address, I'll get your tools sent back next week. I really appreciate their use!
|
Will do, keep them as long as it takes to sleep well at night :)
Cheers |
I like it! Very, very nice work you have done. How long has it taken you to get to this point?
Impressive. |

Ed, here is what you have to look forward to... This is my drive today breaking in the 3.4 some more. Temp outside was 4C, intake airtemp was 6C. Gotta love those 911's..... Good day for a drive, wound her to 6500 a couple of times, only another 1000rpm or so to go!!

Jeff, I'm glad to see you're putting miles on her! Keep 'em piling on, I want to hear about your tuning process as you dial in all of that power. Thanks for the motivation, I can't wait to be behind the wheel again.
4C, that's about what we have here in Dallas this weekend. Went to the Cowboys game on Thursday, and we had snow flurries coming in thru the open roof of the stadium. Now, it's just cold and wet, low 40'sF max... |
Yikes, that is cold for down there isn't it??
I passed on a PCA drive this morning because it was -2C! I will keep folks updated to the tuning process once we go back to the dyno, right now all that is dialed in is the WOT and deccel AFR's. Idle and part throttle are still very rich. But it runs well with no stubles or hestitions. Enough OT, Your motor is looking great, can't wait to see the finished product!! Cheers |
Ed, congrats on the beautiful looking engine!

Got my cam oil lines on today, as well as the motor mount and the engine bar. Then, I cleaned up intake parts for assembly.

Looks good Ed - congrats on your progress...
|
very nice!!!
|
Very nice looking. How did you do the red on the covers ??
|
Ed, looks great!
The ground wire for the alternator goes on the rearmost stud, it's longer for this purpose. |

Ed, that is where they have been on the few 3.2's I have taken apart.

Ed
Wow, fantastic work. I'm impressed and jealous. I look forward to this right of passage - the Pcar engine rebuild. wj |
Thanks wj. I've come across a big hurdle this week-the Flu! So, progress has been nil, and I'd hoped to maybe look at putting her in this weekend. Oh well...
|
Looks very nice Ed, we've got the same thing going around here in East Texas as well.
|
Back at it today.....got the alternator bolted in and wired, mounted the shroud, then installed the heater duct and the block-off plate. Then, I flipped her over one last time(!) to bolt the headers on, and I'm ready for an intake!!
I have the intake halve's assembled, and I'll get the throttle body, fuel rails, injectors and such on tomorrow. This is when pictures are going to be really helpful. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196642333.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196642356.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196642389.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196642415.jpg |
let me know what you need Ed - I have a collection

The reality of it all hit me as I looked at all of the parts, wires, fuel lines, etc, and I knew my aging memory wouldn't be up to the task by itself! |
Ed, its looking good.
|
Oh my that is nice

Well, I believe I got thru the jigsaw puzzle of the intake assembly today. I still need to run the injector harness, but I think I'll do that after I get the assembly on the engine tomorrow. Ignore the shabby boot coming out of the air meter where the cone filter mounted. I got a new 3" ID silicone elbow that will run the filter toward the back of the car, and probably in a position to gulp a little cooler air.
Oh, and I finished totalling up the expenditures on this project... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196721143.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196721174.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1196721207.jpg |
Oh, and I finished totalling up the expenditures on this project...
Now why would you do a thing like that? Tom |
Morbid curisosity.....I've never worried about what I spend on the car, but something about knowing the total on this was driving me nuts.
I've kept every receipt of everything I've bought for the car, and that is something I'll never total. I'd find I'm in 993 Carrera S territory, I'm sure. |

My comment was said a bit tongue and cheek - I too would probably have to know what I'd spent on the rebuild. I have a vague idea what each major project on my car has cost, but would never dare to flip through my very thick 3-ring binder w/a calculator to sum the totals! I think you'd need a super computer to run that. Anyway, it's looking great and now you've got a brand new motor - that you built yourself - whatever it cost, it was worth it. Tom |
Tom, I took your comment as t in c, and I appreciate the compliment!
