Converting 3.0 SC to Turbo

Hey Guys,

I am planning to install a turbo from a 3.2L in my 82 3.0 SC. My question is, using the stock 8.5 CR pistons how much boost can I run on this combination. Or is recommended to change out the pistons with the turbo pistons.
Any advice or recommendation will be appreciated

You will find all the answers to your questions here:

911SC Turbo

I ran 8lbs on my 79 8.5 CR Sc engine using a 7th injector for enrichment. My guess is it made well over 300hp and held up fine.

SDS offers the whole 7th injector piggy back unit to do this. My only concerns are the long-term happiness of the engine at those levels of boost, especially without twin-plugging and with your alusil cylinders. I hear of many people who end up with engines after year of doing such a turbo or supercharger add-on have broken rings or just plain worn out smoking engines.

Just plan on using a big intercooler and you might also consider water/alcohol injection to also stave off detonation, if you go this route. I'd think that something more in the neighborhood of 4-5 lbs will give you lots of added enjoyment. Keep in mind you rarely see anyone running a turbo engine, even twin plugged, with 8.5:1, unless they have their heads and cylinders flame ringed and are using the best of the best of every component! It might be best to do a purpose built turbo engine.

If your 82 is stock it has 9.3 or 9.8 pistons.

iamchappy- Thanks for the input, thats a lot of valuable information. I have bookmarked it and will use it for reference during the build.

Eagledriver- I know i said stock (my bad) I am replacing the cylinders with new ones and have the choice of using 8.5CR or the turbo flat top ones.

cnavarro- I would love to twin plug this baby, but that is not an option right now. The 7th injector deal however seems doable. where can i get more info on this. I seen something mentioned in that post by "iamchappy" , But I did not have enough time to read the entire article.

MIke, I did end up rebuilding my engine twin plug and used 91 turbo pistons and cylinders along with the intake and euro fuel distributor from an 86 930, My 79 SC piston and cylinders were Mahle, Nikasil 8.5CR. I plumbed a 911 SC cold start valve just before the throttle body and had it fire off of a hobbs switch set at 4lbs.
Thad Sutter has used this setup on his car fora very long time without problems.

Thanks for all the input, the car is in surgery right now undergoing fender replacement. I am gathering up all the parts and information so I can start as soon as she is back.

Thanks all, Happy Hollidays
