My Alusil cylinders are shot. What next?
I have established that my 95 mm Alusil cylinders are not reusable, because the ovality is beyond acceptable for four of them (the ones that had broken headstuds). The CIS pistons, however are still good (ring groove clearances within specs). Can I use those with a new set of QSC nikasil cylinders, or do I have to buy a new piston-cylinder set? And if I am going to spend the bucks on a new piston-cylinders set, what are my options for building a 3.2 short-stroke?

please give JB Racing or LN Engineering a look for P&C sets.... both are very good folks to deal with..and both have an outstanding product...

I've got a nice set of Mahle used Nikasil cylinders for a 3.2
PM if interested.

Correction: It looks like my cylinders are still good after all. I was just not properly using the bore gauge. It must rest on a perfectly flat support (I used a rattle can cap). I redid all the measurements, and now I get lot more consistent numbers: between 95.0214 and 95.0468 mm everywhere (top, bottom, 90 degrees...). The diameter wear limit is 95.08 mm and the ovality limit is 0.04 mm, and I am about half of these values

Its an art to using a bore gauge. You could give five different people something to check and I bet all 5 come up with something different. Good to hear they are ok.

Measure twice cut once!!! Ill step away from the bench and move on to another task, then remeasure the bores on another day

Yup, I was going crazy getting a different number every time. The trick was to make sure the bore gauge is always perfectly horizontal, by using a support piece. Now, I got it and am a very confident in my measurements. Actually, the cylinders are already back on the case.

Good news. It was worth checking. What did you do about the cams?

I am sending the cams to John Dougherty for DC15 profile regrind. Actually, I will pack them tonight. I know I am being a bit slow on that rebuild, but winter is not over yet... Cheers, Aurel |
