I think you will find all your answers here, what year is your motor?

Beats the hell out of me....I am dealing with 2 different sets one is a 74?? and the other a unknown.......I have these from various parts motors....I was rather hoping that the ID #'s on the cylinder bases would tell the story...is it in waynes book? (which I have)

One type has 10 fins, and the other has 11 fins. I forgot which is which...wait let me look in the basement...OK, nikasil has 11 fins. Also, the Kolbenschmitt cylinders will have some KS markings on them.

PLEASE wait til someone else can veify this. I don't know if the 10/11 rule applies to all years, I know it does for my 3.0 engine. The cylinders I just looked at in the basement are 2.7 Mahle.

If you look inside them:

the nikasil's bore looks like brushed steel and

the alusil's bore looks like a creamy grey primer coating.

Telling from the exterior would be simpler but is less clear.

Yep I do believe that both sets I have are Niki's as they #1 both have a 11 count fins and #2 they are both slightly magnetic....AND zero visable wear so...I guess I am good to go and will have at least 1 set of 2.7 CIS P & C's for sale very soon as the other set are matched to Ross pistons...:-)

Thanks guy's

Josh

A visual test doesn't automatically green-light the barrels. They could be way out of spec for ovality and still look great. The ring lands on the pistons could be shot, too.

I just went through 13 sets of used 90mm CIS pistons and cylinders looking for a set that was 'truly' good enough to re-use...struck out.

Not trying to say yours are bad - just that you should measure all the specs before re-using them or selling them as 'good'.
