Need rebuild advice

Hello all,

I've been all over the board trying to figure out what I need to get to where I want to be, and I am hoping that some of you experts can give me a bit of direction. My ultimate goal is to turbo charge my '87 Carrera so that it produces at least 300hp and eventually up to 400hp. It will be primarily for the street, but I foresee an increased amount of track time in coming years. I'm not looking to accomplish it all this year, but I do want to make ample headway towards this as I am embarking on a top end rebuild.

When i purchased the car from the PO, I had Jeff Jones from Automotive Techniques outside of Detroit perform a PPI. In doing so, he also administered a leak down test and a compression test as the car was smoking more than acceptably. Leakage test results by cylinder:
1. 2%
2. 2%
3. 2%
4. 2%
5. 2%
6. 4%

Compression test by cylinder:
1. 170 psi
2. 165 psi
3. 170 psi
4. 165 psi
5. 170 psi
6. 165 psi

Jeff said the car was otherwise in top condition mechanically. It has 66,000 miles on that odo. By late fall, my P car was smoking A LOT, so I decided to park it and have a valve job performed over the winter. So far, in talking to other Pelicans, I've decided to make the following upgrades/changes while performing the valve job: Supertec head studs, ARP rod bolts, and 8.5:1 compression JE pistons.

I've read a lot about the value of Twin Plugging cylinder heads as it pertains to high compression egines. However, I've observed that a lot of guys who turbo charge their 911 (with lower compression) decide to Twin Plug. Would this be very beneficial for me? Meaning... would it result in a longer-lasting, higher performing engine? I know that the 964 distributor goes for around $750. Anchor Atlantic gave me a quote of $400 for the machine work on the heads to have them twin plugged. What are the other costs associated with twin plugging? Just new ignition wires and plugs?

Are there any other modifications that are advisable given my end goal? Would porting/polishing the heads be beneficial? If I were to do all of these upgrades/mods, I believe I'm looking at spending around $6000. Without spending a couple thousand more, am I within reach of attaining a longer lasting, higher performing engine? Thanks so much for your time and advice, guys. I hope I can acquire enough experience one day that I can give back some to this community.

Hey Andy,

I can't answer too many of your questions, except one. To twin plug you will need everything you mentioned and a splitter from andial. There was a thread on here a while ago where Loren was leading everyone around on how to build a splitter for the signal, but I never saw the conclusion of the thread.

And here is a company that does turbo charged carreras.

BTW we are neighbors.

Good luck and hope to see you on the road someday.

Rich
