Why are GT3 oil pumps so big?
It makes sense that an air cooled 911 engine should have a big oil pump because it's really doubling as the coolant pump as well.
But why didn't Porsche reduce the size of the pump (and save associated power losses) once they went to water cooling? Just curious. -Chris

Chris,
Those pumps are big to move the necessary volume of oil in both pickup and scavenge modes especially when the drive ratios are fixed. Given the peak RPM of the GT-3 engine and its racing variants that rev to 9800, the oil pump cannot really be downsized without compromising flow and durability.
