What Is the weight difference between 3, 3.2 & 3.6
What is the weight difference between 3, 3.2 & 3.6 Engines?
I have a 74 with a 3.0 litre and I had to put in 26mm torsionbars when i removed the 2.7, now I'm thinking or going to a 3.2 or 3.6 and want to know if I will have to replace my torsion bars in setting up the rear suspension agian for a 3.2 or 3.6. Also is there any major difference in doing the conversion between a 3.2 & a 3.6 litre engine. Cheers Matt

Matt,
You don't necessarily have to change the spring rate (torsion bar diameter) when changing the engine. You rather need to set the ride height properly to compensate for different engine weights. Porsche went to stiffer torsion bars over the years to combat squatting as power went up. Your torsion bar size really depends on your overall set up of the car (track, street) and what shocks and sway bars you are using. There are not too many differences between the 3.2 and the 3.6 in terms of the conversion: both use a Bosch Motronic for fuel injection and spark control that has to be properly wired in. The transmission bell housing has to be notched to clear the flywheel sensor(s) but that is about it. With the 3.6 you need to think about proper oil cooling since it does not have the on-engine oil cooler anymore. The more displacement you have the more power the engine is going to make. That being said, I love my 3.6 and would never want to look back. By the end of the day it all comes down to price you are willing to pay vs. performance you are going to get. It goes like this: 3.0 < 3.2 < 964 3.6 < 993 3.6 < 993 3.6 VarioRam. Of course you can do aftermarket 3.8 conversions, too to bump it up yet another notch. If you can afford it get a 993 Euro VarioRam. That is the ultimate for normally aspirated engines. But even with a 964 you can get to 300HP with a chip and proper exhaust setup. That is the best bang for the buck IMHO. There is tons of information out here. Do a search. Ingo
