2.2T w/ E pistons - Henry or Someone Help?
I need some sound advice on what to do with my current engine. I have been reading tons and tons on engine options and I have about given up. I am in the process of completing my 70 coupe vintage racer build and want to figure out the engine and my options (I don't really want to pull the current engine next winter and rebuild - just want the whole car done and enjoy).
Currently the car has a recently professional rebuilt 2.2T engine with 2.2E P&C's and webers. All other items are stock except for the carrera chain tensioner upgrade. The engine runs fantastic but will not be competitive by any means in the Rocky Mountain Vintage circuit or any other vintage circuit for that matter. So do I "upgrade" to 2.2S P&C's and port the heads and call it done or do I put in 2.4/2.7 crank and rods since I already have E pistons or what??? I am limited to 2.2L so no fancy SS's or other options. Or does someone out there already have a nice track/street engine they want to sale? AND I do not want advice that you need to start with a 7R case, blah, blah - there are many racers here in vintage that do not run all that "fancy" stuff and still make the podium. Thanks in advance. You should be talking to the guys you will race with. If they are like most race groups they will have lots of advice for how to build a competitive engine. The 2.4/2.7 crank won't help you since that will make your engine a 2.4 unless you use smaller pistons and cylinders. Changint to 2.2S pistons and porting will give you a little more power but not much more than porting what you already have. What gears can you run. Around here the vintage 2 litre cars have very exotic engines that rev to 8500 or more. If the others in your group are doing that then the things you are talking about won't make a difference.

"E" pistons are cast rather than forged and are inappropriate for higher cylinder pressures resulting during race car applications.
If your cylinders are still round and have little or no taper you can have forged JE, Wassner, Cosworth or some other racing piston made to fit your cylinders. Better yet, bore the cylinders oversized (+.040=85 mm) and you'll be working with great new tolerances. The compression ratio on your new pistons will be determined by fuel and cam choices. Recently we have been experimenting with custom shapes on smaller ports and the results are surprising. Choose a port size that matches the red line RPM you desire. The lower the red line the smaller the port. Cams will also be determined by the red line you choose. High lift, medium duration with a wider lobe center seems to produce the "best" power band. "Best" defined as flat throughout the RPM range you choose. 4000-6000rpm, 5000-7000 rpm and so on. With these small engine 2000 rpm power band is probably the best you can hope for. Build a transmission with a 1600-1800 rpm gear drop and you should be good to go. Keep in mind with most new generation high performance cams you should use better quality valve springs than the factory supplied. You should be good to go with your bottom end but a memory tach is advised so that over revvs can be monitored. "Two and your through" is a good rule of thumb [as long as the first one is not over 10,500]. I would also recommend cam feed oil restricters because the oil pump in your engine needs all the help it can get. These help to keep a good supply of oil pressure in the bottom end where your engine has obvious limitations.

Brant,
Unfortunately I will not be able to make La Junta...first we had our baby Chloe last weekend (2 weeks early) and second I just picked up the coupe this past Friday and will not have enough time to put it all back together. So I guess I will be completing DE's this year and shoot for RMVR next year... DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY 2.2s P&C'S, HEADS AVAILABLE? Thanks, Sam PS - Here are some bad pictures of the coupe... ![]() ![]() |
