Exhaust stud removal

Hi!
I'm new here, and I have decided to enter here because of all the expertise I see.
Here in Norway, we have tech-forums for Porsche, (Porsche-club-norge.no), but Norway is a small country, so answers to questions may be limited.

I am currently doing a rebuild of my '79 911 SC.
I have removed the heads, with the exhaust studs still in there. Some are broken off, with apx. 5 mm sticking out.
My question is this:
Is it wise to try to remove these studs now that the heads are off?
I am worried this will bend the heads if I put them in a vise, and start applying force to the studs...
Perhaps it is best I leave this to the shop, since they will refurbish them anyhow?
(It's just that I am trying to save a few bucks, and labour ain't cheap, unless you do it yourself..)

Best regards, Otto

Otto,

If you are sending the heads to be rebuilt in a shop, let them take care of the studs. The cost was minimal in the whole bill , ask them how much they charge per stud. If you want to try yourself, spray some penetrating oil, use a propane torch, and use the tool I posted in my thread. But the saving isn`t worth the effort, in my opinion.

I just had my heads redone her for a valve job and the shop charged me a minimal amount to remove/repair the studs. You may just want to call the shop to check but in my case it was next to nothing to have the work done. Something like under $10 so is was not really much of a hard decision. Of course by taking the engine out and disassembling it myself I am saving a fortune.

Thanks guys!
That's what I wanted to hear...
Probably better to let the professionals do this, since I would have used a lot of time trying to remove them... -Espescially if the cost is reasonable!

+1 on the advice to let the machine shop do the stud removal. Shop charged me $10 per stud and that included installing a helicoil in each hole.
