My First Engine Drop on 964 C4
Some weeks ago I have acquired a 964 convertible that requires quiet some work. This is my first 911 and I need to drop the engine out of my 1991 964 C4 Cabriolet because of heavy oil leaks and a broken cylinder block stud. I have found a mechanic that intends to help me but unfortunately neither he nor I have ever dropped a 911 engine. After we have lifted the car up we both were fairly confused what we have to do on the C4 to drop the engine. My mechanic felt that he almost has to lowerr the whole front and rear drive-train to enable him to drop the engine. I understand that we need to remove the engine and the tranny but do we really have to lower the torque tube, front diff etc? What is the best manual or web article to follow to drop the engine of a C4? Any other things I have to do while the engine is out? I have already purchased a new clutch.
Thanks for your advise. |

You lower the engine and transmission together.
At the transmission / torque tube junction there is an access cover under which you can seperate them. (its a grey sliding sleeve that you loosen both bolts on and slide to seperate the torque tube from the tranny) You really should buy a book. It will save you alot of time. I would recommend Waynes book on rebuilding a 911 motor and Adrian streathers 964 book. Which I think has a section about dropping the engine. The factory workshop manuals are very handy as well. Good luck Kirk

Thanks for your help. Do you know how I can identify which flywheel I have in my car and if I have to replace it?
Thanks |

What year is your car?
1989 had a single mass flywheel, later models had a dual mass flywheel. There is a possibility you have a later model that has had its flywheel changed to a RS light weight flyhweel. It will be easily reconizable once you separate the motor and transmission. (for one thing its about 20 lbs lighter) if you search this forum there is a thread called 3.6 rebuild, where I documented my rebuild. It shows a LWF and a DMF. Kirk

Dont forget the two torque tube bolts underneath the rear of the center counsel- I only say that because it played havoc for me my first time.
