Silly Engine Questions Thread

oK, let me start. I've got Wayne's book. I see mention of a motor with 2.7 crank in the 3.0 case. Is there any way to use the 3.2 Pistons/cylinders with the 2.7 crank in the 7R case? Could you just shorten the cylinder?

I've read many pages of this forum..no mention. Obvious newbie wonders.

The 3.2 has 95mm piston/cylinders and will not fit the 7R case. The biggest piston size that can be fitted into the 7R case are from LN Engineering and they are 93mm and that's pushing it to the max.

Thank you for the info. Is it more a bolt spacing issue or strength issue?

It has to do with the size of the hole in the case that the rods stick trough, the round opening between the 4 studs.
You would have to grind them larger but I would not recommend doing that ...

OK... Next question.

If that just has to do with spigot size/case strength rather than bolt spacing, then question number two is "Can SC heads be used on smaller bore cylinders?"

No and no. The head stud spacing changed on the SCs and up, so jugs/heads from 3l motors cannot be used on the 2.7 cases, and vice versa.

Actually, I'm finishing up a set of cylinders special made with the case register of a 2.7 and head register of a 3.0/3.2, to allow for later heads. The customer is going to modify the heads to fit the 2.7 stud pattern, as it's actually pretty close and quite feasible and not all that expensive to do. It was actually the customer's idea and not a bad one at all!

Let me test a set!

Assuming that's a no, on to question III:

I'm obsessed with implementing megasquirt. The plan was to use some 3.2 Intake stuff I've sourced and port the heads to match. Will this kill air velocity? This is not intended to be a track car--just some track days. I realize that there's a lot of other stuff at play here, but is this a very bad idea?

PS: Thanks to the board for entertaining questions from a newbie.

Here is a silly question for the thread: could one build a 3.3 NA motor from a 3.0 case and 3.3 turbo cylinders with higher compression JE pistons?

I am no expert in this area, but I think the 3.3L engine has the same case as the 3.0L 911SC, right?

So, if this is true...you should be able to do it.
