C2 Cylinders/Head Seepage

Do any of you remember the problems with some of the C2 cylinders/heads seeping oil? I know there were only a small percentage of engines with the problem but I was wondering if any of you recall how it happened. Was the the heads, the cylinders?

The only thing I can remember was that (I *THINK*) a special gasket/o-ring needed to be used with the cylinders.

Heads to cylinders - Porsche bulliten states that if the area is wet to the touch - they need to be addressed.

The solution is new P & C's - although I think that Ollies is now machining in a later sealing groove.

Dave,

The leakage was due to lack of sealing rings between the heads and cylinders. Late, replacement cylinders had a groove for a gasket and the heads can be machined to suit.

We've had really good luck machining those early heads for a sealing ring and them modifying the tops of the existing cylinders to fit. After 20+ sets over the past 6-7 years, nary a leak. :) :)

I had one of those sets Steve speaks of, working great!

Cheers

Steve, if it isn't giving away some proprietary situation, I am intrigued how after surfacing the heads out to the later barrel specs you can reuse the barrels.
I respect that kind of ingenuity. Once again if you don't mind a picture would be cool.

I don't have any pictures but we machine the heads for the later sealing rings and put a small bevel on the top edges of the cylinders to exert pressure on the rings.

Works great. :)

I run a set of "early" C2 barrels machined by Walt from Competition Engineering. They were a warrantly replacement. He machined a step into the top sealing surface and I put a fire-ring in from the Turbo. The engine is leak-free for 20.000 miles now and I am very happy with that. Mine were leaking a lot before and were unsalvageable. They went out of round.
