thermostat application

Hey guys, longtime lurker, first time poster. I have a question about my engine, a72t spec in a factory 9146. recently gone through and runs great. I have checked my thermostat by boiling, operationally opens closes fine but I am getting oil spray on my rear window?? I checked all breather hoses, pressure switch, and thermostat. After cleaning everything off it appears my thermostat is the source of the spray. I have a late model tstat(74on) and want to drop it in and see if it eliminates the spray. The ports in the side of the late model are a bit bigger, but other than that is there a problem with putting the newer model t-stat in to see if that stops the spray?...what say the collective wisdom? thanks John

Is your O-Ring around the thermostat in good shape? Is it the correct size? Also your crank case breather hose connection at the case could be loose, the hose clamp?

thanks for the reply Mark, yeah the o ring was the first thing I replaced, then took off the breather hoses and reconncected, making sure they were all tight. As far as being the right size, when I ordered it the parts guy looked it up, and when I put it on it seemed to fit good, although now that you mention it it was more cylindrical then the one I took off, I chalked it up to the old one flattening out after awhile. I am going to wrap all the breather hoses next, and possibly throw the other t-stat in there, Im just not sure about possible damage from having the wrong t-stat in the engine.

The thermostats are all interchangable. The early stats were adjustable with a stud and nut but all are interchangeable.
