2.7 rebuild...what cams
I face an unexpected rebuild on a 2.7 that was thought to be sound (good leakdown #s). I found shrapnel in the case and decided to split , evaluate and decide.
I want know what people have done with using more agressive cams with the CIS pistons, vs what they have done with aftermarket pistons and cams. This was a mule engine...and now it needs work. If I can run the CIS pistons with an E profile cam...I want to do it. If I have to cut into the pistons for valve releif...I would rather go with a JE piston. Thoughts ? Speedo,
I've not heard of anyone using E-cams with the CIS pistons. Hopefully others will chime in on that. Here's what i have done: I have a relatively stock 2.7S, CIS w/CIS cams, SSI's, sport muffler, etc and I also have a 2.7 hi-comp, RS motor, w/9.5:1 JE's, E-cams, Weber 40 IDAs, SSI's, 2in-1out Dansk sport muffler. Two different animals. The CIS engine starts right up, idles very smoothly, does everything well, is pretty quick, etc. The 2.7 hotrod motor is just that. Yikes! No cold start stuff... morning Weber "wake up the neighbors" ritual, but once it's started and warmed up, stand back beeeeyaaatch. Howls like a weasel on fire. Other than that...no difference. PS: These two engines get swapped in and out of my 77S. When one is in , I miss the other, etc. It;s always a trade off. the CIS, as old as it is now, is very civilized compared to the 2.7RS high comp, hotrod motor....but you knew that. What are you going to use the car for?

Lars, I'd just ping John Dougherty, give him your pistons specs and have him grind you a set of cams from factory billets. He'll know.
Al, I am a slacker on getting you those MFI horns. If in a hurry, let me know; I will reprioritize and get off of my lazy ass.
