Chain Tensioner Question

Yeah I know I'm supposed to upgrade to the bulletproof pressure fed tensioners.
Moving on... Any experts out there know what would cause a slow collapsing of the older style tensioner? I rebuilt mine, replacing o-rings etc. and it still collapses slowly (overnight) Would a weak spring under the check ball cause this problem? There doesnt seem to be any excessive looseness between the piston and tensioner body. I am using safety collars to prevent total collapse. I also bled the tensioner , and I believe I got all the air out.
