last minute advice splitting case
1984 3.2 is now all the way down to splitting the case. I have rebuilt the top end on my 85 3.2 but didn't split the case. Any last minute advice do's and dont's before I dive in. I have Wayne's rebuild book which is a total must for anyone doing this themselves and it shows where you can hit and pry but is there a spot better to start from than others or just tap away and hope for a spot to open.

I just sort of slowly worked it apart but make sure and DON"T use anything like a screwdriver that might mar the 2 mating faces. I used some wooden dowels to slowly leverage it apart. At first it will be pretty tough to get them apart.

On my 2.7 I had a difficult time. I have split many a case on a variety of machines so I had some idea of how it is supposed to happen. After some work with no joy to be found i decided to make some wood wedges to help apply pressure in some available spots. When the case finally broke lose I heard a definate loud "crack." I was sure I broke something. Turned out to be just the case seperating. My moral would be that these things can be very tight so be determined but gentle.

Just make sure you have all the perimeter nuts and bolts removed. I always seem to forget one when I start to split a case.
I use a hand held hammer with a 6" piece of 2X4. There are 4 spots on the case shown in Wayne's book to place the 2X4. Watch the seam while you hammer and you should see the case start to split. One or two good knocks in each spot should get it started. Once it starts to come apart you need to focus on getting the gap on the flywheel end wide enough so that you can lift the case half off by hand. No metal contact on the case allowed! |
Thanks, case came apart real nice with a little tapping.
posted pics of inside of case doesn't look like 225,000 miles to me. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/422181-dfink-takes-over-kurt-b-2.html |
Rubbe mallet is your friend, as is a soft ended drift for the few areas you can actually land it.
