Ring problems

Hi, I'm in the middle of the rebuild but my mechanic says that the piston rings fit a little bit bigger than they should. It was everything perfect std size, I ordered the rings from our host and when I got them they said 85mm but I thought it was a misprint, nevertheless I'm worried about my car losing Compression...

I don't know maybe they will just fit correctly but confirmation would not hurt.

Thanks for any recommendation...

John

Ok, a stock 2,2T has 84mm cylinders. Unless the cylinders were bored out to 85mm, 85mm is the wrong ring. Measure the cylinders with a bore gauge and determine the right size rings, then install those with the factory-recommended ring gap.

Ring gap is customarily measured by placing the ring in the bottom of the cylinder, leveling it out (a piston can be used for this) and placing a feeler gauge in the gap.

They are 84mm and in perfect condition but I don't know about the rings, I though it was a label misprint but shall I considered that our host sent me 85 mm rings ? I don't even see him selling those...

It it a T engine with 'E' P/C, Cams

My mechanic said that the originals fit even better than the new ones, therefore IM WORRIED, LOL :D

I have the details of the rings..

Factory suggested Ring gap .006 - .039

Actual ring gap (of the new rings) .019

Used piston rings gap .017...

what can I do in this case?
do you know where can I find the right rings if these do not work?

thanks again for your help

.006 -.017 is the factory range. do you have goetze rings or deves?

jasam 10-30-2008 07:02 PM

goetze and the ring gap they have it is .019.. I bought them form our host
the used ones had .017 and it smoked a little bit..

:( what you think

I had the same problem with a set of 90mm rings from Goetz. I ended up using the old rings and returning the "new" rings. I don't know why they send rings with big gaps.

but then I wont be able to fix the smoking problem... it did smoke a little bit and I want it perfect... shall I buy another set and pray for them to be ok?

Would there be any difference between Mahle rings and goetze?
