3.0 SC Tear down 4-5-6 hunting for rattle

In my previous post I mentioned having had a noise that was emitting from between #4 and right chain housing. First things was of course to place 930 pressure fed tensioners and check for broken chain ramps. Done. Took to my friend's Porsche shop. He hears it at #6 but not sounding internal his says. He doesn't do "deep" ventures into 911 engines anymore.... and I don't have the cash anyway. So, I removed the motor, got rid of the old 3 wheel point engine stand, and bought a new 4 wheel 2000 lbs. capacity engine stand. Also picked up another "long arm" 5000 lbs. capacity floor jack. I finally got the engine onto the stand by myself with some good balancing of the engine with a board underneath it and centered to the floor jack. I don't recommend your doing this... just happen to know how with confidence.
Next comes flipping the engine sideways, remove some metal trim and heater hoses, valve covers, and then investigating the valves for "something askew". If you are interesting in following along, I'd be glad to have sets of eyes and ears making suggestions where I missed something or something can be done a better way. Josh

You can sister one of the beams in the ceiling of your garage with another 2X4 from the top of a wall out to the center and temporarily stuff a 4X4 in the middle of the beam, at the end of the new 2X4. Then a come-a-long from the engine to the new beam so you don't have to balance the engine on a floor jack at the risk of your toes. I need all ten for counting.

Hey SSW14, Interesting idea. Actually there is a piece chain hanging from my garage rafters obviously used to pull a motor out of an American car. I happen to have a classic American car I'm going to restore just after I fix this Porsche engine rattle. Want to see the American car??? Here ya go.....

1965 Malibu SS Chevelle

327 Chevy Block (will be my first American engine rebuild. parts seem cheap after building porsches.)

You can do a SBC rebuild with a large pair of channelocks, some vice grips, and a ball peen hammer. In the dark, behind a barn, next to some goats.

SBC= small block chevy. I was simply saying that they are really easy to work on, relative to a Porsche 6 cyl.
I was attempting humor. unfortunately humor doesn't always work.
The goats could have been cows or chickens or even pigs or llamas, I forgot that GTO's were called goats, but it really doesn't matter at this point because I have bombed this comedy show.
I haven't actually had an alcoholic beverage for a few days, I just have a weird sense of humor I guess.
I'll get drunk tonight and try again, just for fun.

flieger, Thanks for clearing that up for me. I guess it's obvious I don't know the GM terminology. Porsche 911 engines is all I know and that's been hit and miss, but I'm good at detail. I make stained glass for churches and cemeteries lately. Lots of precision cut glass pieces are involved as you can imagine and then assembly and then installation to the building.
Did you go to Templeton High School by any chance. One of my best friends was the Band Teacher there for about 8 years back in the 90s. We used to go to SLO town for Thursday night Market night.... don't know what it's really called, but the beef ribs BBQ there taste great.
Thanks again for the clarity. jOsH

I understood what sww914 was joking about. I just tried to work in the GTO because he chose "goats" instead of "pigs" or any other animal- like a Mustang?

I actually was born and raised in 1000 Oaks but am going off to Cal Poly to study Mechanical Engineering. Classes start Sept.22

And now, we return to our regularly scheduled program. Back to the Porsches...

Hey SWW14, Thanks to Flieger I totally got your previous post. I laughed out loud, literally. Don't give up the humor especially if it's weird. I'm exactly the same way. I love dry humor..... it just didn't get the abbreviations.... so don't abbreviate could be your answer. See you at the "Laugh Factory"....lol. Here's one. "There were two flies on the ceiling. One fly pointed at the other fly and said, "Hey, your "man" is open!"
I hate to ask, but what does SWW14 mean? I assume has something to do with a 914 Porsche.
regards, jOsH

Flieger, I graduated from Newbury Park Academy off Wendy Drive 2 exits passed T.O. My girlfriends dad owned Carlson's Brick Store on T.O. Blvd. She is now a lawyer and has a office on the same blvd. Good luck with your schooling.
Regards, josh

I was in Eygpt, Greece, and the Greek Islands last month and this is the only Porsche I saw in 3 weeks vacationing. BTW did you know the gasoline in Egypt is only $1.07 per gallon American dollars? They drill their own.... don't sell it to anyone and don't buy it from anyone.

Been to Germany but don't know any German.... so no insinuations from me. Interesting concept regardless. "Did you know that all the offices in Maine, are the main offices?" Okay, I'm done with my comedy career. JOSH

My initials and my car put together. I joined ebay so early that my ebay user name is sww9. I tried for that on all the web boards but it was already taken so I went with sww914.
I won't give up on my comedy, as a hobby, thanks, but I'm keeping my day job for now.
Absolutely beautiful windows! Unbelievable.
Good luck with your engine repair, we're here for you even if it's just for bad comic relief.
BTW, welcome to the area, fleiger. I have a shop about 7-8 miles from SLO, you can stop by sometime if you'd like.
I do a lot of Porsche bodywork and racecar maintenance, I usually have some cool projects around.

Sww9, Engine repair IS comedy. I have felt so stupid sometimes I bust out laughing. Like when I got an engine in the car and all 4 mounting bolts tightened and hoses hooked up ...... just to find the fuel line to goes to the fuel accumulator got caught between the engine tin and the engine compartment. Had to do low the engine again. Not too bad, but felt ridiculous.

sww914, thanks for the offer. I will have to come see your cool projects some weekend when I am not too busy. And yes, I intend to work hard becuase I want to get into the Porsche industry as an Engineer, maybe a chassis/suspension engineer for the Flying Lizards, Craig Watkins, the chief Engineer, graduated from Cal Poly SLO.

I am really looking forward to the Formula SAE car competition. You guys know about it?

relayswitcher, Are you near SLO? I would be happy to help you if you needed a hand on a Porsche project.

Your tensioners are on the way for this project? I am wondering what the noise was.

Actually, I'm a ways away near Palm Springs, but Sunday I'm heading to Ventura County Fairgrounds for the Porsche show and swap. One of the best in the area. I may be driving up to Napomo near Santa Maria to see a friend. If I do I'll try to come by and check you out. Send a private message with directions info. Relayswitcher

I am going to the German Autofest on Saturday, I am moving into school on Monday.

I actually helped organize the show for the past month or 2. Check out the Ventura Show thread in the tech forum. I will see you there. You can look for my car or ask for Max.

Regards,

Max Sluiter "Flieger"

Haven't found the noise yet. Just got the engine on the stand and will start to dig in on the engine this weekend. I already eliminated it being "chain rattle" by putting a 930 pressure fed tensioner kit on it. That did not get rid of the noise. I will post pics as I get deeper into the right side top end.

Decided to go to the Germanfest in Ventura last minute early Sunday. Arrived around 830am. Max, I guess you were only there Sat. I really liked seeing this 911 configuration set up for a speedster / 356 engine option. Greek guy, I was just in Greece, named Dean. Had the case fabricated and it's twin plugged, too. My problem is I can't afford $50K for a complete engine or $30k for a kit he sells and I don't think he can sell for less without taking a big loss. Hopefully, by the time I get to building a speedster replica it will be more affordable for me. Here's a photo and a car that I liked quite a bit.
