Virtual Carnage Museum - Post Engine Damage Pictures

After seeing the pictures in tom1394racing 's thread about a questionable engine case:

I did some searching and couldn't find a thread dedicated to pictures of engine carnage.

It is likely that someone will point out that such a thread does exist and that "dtw" will accept donations to his non-virtual museum as pointed out in the damaged case thread. I thought a virtual/ultimate picture thread with this theme was in order.
  • Lets keep it to internal powertrain failures not related to collisions.
  • A story (symptom, diagnosis, treatment) would be a bonus.
Collect those pictures you have, or have seen. and lets put them in one place.

Here is my contribution:

Story - dropped #1 exhaust valve on a 1975 56K mile engine - blame the valve guides or turn 13 at Thunderhill. I drove 90 miles like this, the valve head was stuck sideways in its seat, so the damage is "limited". It blew a lot of oil smoke and ran rough but got me home.....

Fragments from the piston traveled across the CIS system to rough up the other side as well:

The engine has been rebuilt to stock and is running strong. New piston from eBay and I found a bargain engine with RS P&C's to donate some cylinders.

I'm anxious to see pictures that top these!

there you go, a 3.0Lt engine from the breakers, when it was picked up, it was burnt out and the damage was not to apparent????? (ho bugger).

some studs from this engine are now in a engine in the USA to help out a rebuild.

Are these supposed to be more or less round and in one piece?

Thanks for the contributions!

In the shot with the bivalved cylinder - I see thread marks in the head stud channel - ideally the head studs shouldn't contact the cylinder there. Could that have contributed to this failure??

That 3.0 was lucky to have a crankshaft to hold the ends of the case together.

John - I know you work in nanometer precision, but those shots don't elicit thoughts of carnage.

(I did consider that my own contribution was kinda weak considering the company-- then I remembered that I had FIVE broken compression rings just like you see there. . . more of an AGGREGATE feeling of dread vs. the "shock and awe" of Tim's grenades. . . )
